Promoting state of the art Otolaryngology Care in East Africa

Dr. Desiderius Chiussi

While he was a medical student at KCMC, Dr. Chiussi travelled to the US for an ENT elective with Drs. Robbins and Woodson at Southern Illinois University. Upon graduation, he was one of the first three physicians to train in the new KCMC ENT Residency. After completing his residency, he became a teacher in the program and received an International Visiting Scholar Grant from the American Academy of Otolaryngology, to attend the Annual Meeting in Dallas and to visit Dr. Mark Courey at the University of California in San Francisco. He has subsequently completed a fellowship in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery in Cape Town and is currently Chairs the Department of Otolaryngology at KCMC.

Dr. Peter Shija

Dr. Shija became interested in ENT during medical school, inspired by a visiting otolaryngologist from Germany, and was among the first three residents to complete the new ENT Training Program. He was the recipient of an International Visiting Scholar grant from the American Academy of Otolaryngology, to attend its Annual Meeting and to spend time in Philadelphia, observing in Otology with Dr. Michael Ruckenstein at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed an otology fellowship at Ain Sham University in Cairo.

DR. DENIS KATUNDU

Dr. Katundu is a graduate of KCMC Medical School and was in the second group of Residents trained in the ENT program. He was awarded a grant to attend an International Sleep Apnea Course at Celebration Hospital in Orlando, Florida, followed by an observership at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. After graduation, he joined the faculty of the ENT Department at KCMC. He has completed a fellowship in Pediatric ENT at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town South Africa and is currently President of the Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Society in Africa (PENTAfrica.)
